Ozempic belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 agonists used for type 2 diabetes. Other GLP-1 agonist medications similar to Ozempic include Trulicity, Victoza, Bydureon, and Adlyxin.
Ozempic is an injection medication used to help control high blood sugar for people with type 2 diabetes.
Ozempic is not FDA-approved for weight loss and is not considered a weight loss medication. However, people who take Ozempic for type 2 diabetes have reported losing weight over the past year.
Typically patients see their blood glucose levels start dropping after 5 weeks and a maximum effect within 3-6 months of use.
Ozempic is not recommended to be used during pregnancy. Other types of medications may be recommended by doctors to treat diabetes in pregnant women.
